A complete set of Cycling Magazine sponsored Velodrome lap boards

£550.00

This complete set of wooden velodrome lap marker boards are a wonderful and increasingly uncommon survivor from British track cycling. The purpose of these A frame boards was to show riders and spectators how many laps remained in a race. During races, officials would quickly replace one board with another as the laps counted down.

This set is particularly interesting because of the advertising for Cycling magazine which came out each Thursday.

The most probable date of this set is the late 1940’s to 1950’s when Cycling magazine was priced at 6d.

The construction of each H: 36 inches (91 cm) x W: 24 inches (61 cm) consists of:

-        Solid timber frame

-        Mortice and tenon joint

-        Heavy piano hinges

-        Removable painted plywood panels

-        Integral folding legs

-        Original grey paint

These were built to survive years of outdoor use.

Condition

Overall, this unique collection is in very good original condition with complete hinges, correct folding and no obvious structural repairs.

Given their age and outdoor use, some of the wooden beading on a few boards is missing or damaged but beyond the obvious abrasions, chips and slight fading, all four boards are in an excellent decorative state.

This set would work beautiful in loft apartments, garage, gyms, cycling cafes and bike shops due to their providence, branding and striking yellow and black graphics.
